Happiness and Pretence

New job, new people, new experiences. That’s often how my thoughts begin. Yes, I’m in a season of searching—looking for a place to stay. And here too, there was one I considered suitable.

First encounter: a seemingly firm boss. Ego above all. Yelling, undermining colleagues, throwing pans at those who carry his name—literally like dogs. Shamelessly late arrivals and early departures from work were nothing unusual. Behind him stood a deputy—a superman—tirelessly smoothing over every mistake and doing most of the work for his superior.

I realized the importance of the person standing behind us immediately. And how easily we can be blinded by the comfort of our success.

I came in as his successor—superman had announced his departure. It took me just over a week to decide not to support this reality. I chose to remain in an ordinary position. I wasn’t alone. Others who came here left. Others who had been working there changed course. In the end, just a few of us remained—and in two days, I’m leaving too.

But something is different now. The ego is gone. Replaced by hard work, gratitude, humanity, and genuine laughter.

What changed?

There was no one left to shield him. Hardly anyone left to hand him the pans. He had to understand—he would be alone. He had to work to keep it all going.

What good is ego, if no one sees it?

We’re left naked, alone with ourselves. No matter what we wear, we can’t hide from our own reflection. And let’s be honest—no one wants to be alone.

He won. And I take off my hat.

The last rumblings of thunder are still fading, but he emerged from this storm like a butterfly, rediscovering the beauty of living and its true essence. Just a simple conversation. A simple laugh.

Maybe this society, too, deeply needs this kind of transformation—to lose what feeds the illusion of immortality, to fall to the ground, and find love—one for another.
